Principles
Mother Teresa was a woman who dedicated her life to the noble cause of advancing the gospel to the poor and needy of the world while caring for their physical needs also. Mother Teresa was a devout Roman Catholic and some her beliefs would necessarily have to stand at odds with core Christian beliefs, mainly being love, self-sacrifice and generosity. This is very common with the founders of religious orders, and are strong enough in their faith to make their way through life totally dependent on Faith, Hope and Charity: the three cardinals.
One of the principals Teresa lived by was her own vision. She realised that she was the voice of her vision and thats what kept her motivated every day of her life. Her vision was love and peace and was kept simple. By trusting and believing in her vision, she managed to help so many people and do simple, yet inspiring changes the the world we live in today.
Mother Teresa had a generosity of spirit about her, as she liked to help others and the less fortunate more than she liked to help herself. She would go out of her comfort zone to help people which a lot of people wouldn’t do, and this shows a trust in God and comes from the heart to help all the people less fortunate than herself. She was a person that was very open to change and would do almost anything to help anyone that needed it. Mother Teresa had a belief that no one should die alone, so she started a house for the dying an destitute in Calcutta. She believed that even if the person didn’t have a family member or friend to say goodbye to them while they were in the house, they would still have a nurse or herself to be there for them and wouldn’t be completely alone when dying or in a very bad stage.
Mother Teresa had a lot of quotes and one that really stood out to me was “All you have to do is love one person at a time”. I think that this means instead of loving so many people at one time, if you’re talking to someone at one point, then you love them at that present time. Then if you move on to someone else, you engage with them and love them at that new point in time. If you were ever lucky enough to meet Mother Teresa, you knew instantly that you had met someone very special and unique.
Teresa went through great periods of doubt, and even though she had strong beliefs about God and her visions, she also doubted them and questioned God’s love and existence. However, she kept motivated and always succeeded in what she wanted to do. She had a tenacity to hold on to what she believed. She was a very ‘shrewd’ woman which meant she was very clever in understanding how the world operates and used that to get what she wanted.
Teresa embraced what she questioned about the world, but also what other people questioned. She took everything on board with her and would get what she wanted done, but also in a way that everyone around her was happy.
