Events in Mother Teresa's Life
Awards and Praise
Mother Teresa received a lot of awards and one major one was the Bharat Ratna. This stood for ‘Jewel of India’ and she received this in 1980. This award is India’s highest civilian award and it was given for the performance of highest order in any field of human endeavor or national service. This service includes artists, literacy and scientific achievements, as well as ‘recognition of public service of the highest order’, which is the category in which Mother Teresa won the award.
Mother Teresa was also awarded the Nobel Peace Prize one year earlier. A title awarded to those who have “done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the holding and promotion of peace congresses”. These awards show that Mother Teresa did a lot for the people around her and in the world and she was lucky enough to get recognised and awarded for it.
Missionaries of Charity
In October 1950, Mother Teresa started a Missionary called Missionaries of Charity, which was aimed to love and care for those persons nobody was prepared to look after. It also received permission from the Vatican to exist as a church subject.
It began as a small community with 12 members in Calcutta, and now has over 4,000 Sisters running orphanages, AIDS hospices and charity centers in over 133 countries all around the world. In Mother Teresa’s words, they look at caring for “the hungry, the naked, the homeless, the crippled, the blind, the lepers, all those people who feel unwanted, unloved, uncared for throughout society, people that have become a burden to the society and are shunned by everyone”. The opening of this Missionary really showed that someone willing to make a change to the world can do it and that other people are always willing to help and follow in similar ways. In seeing the changes of how many people helped out and how there are now Missionaries in over 133 countries is incredible.
Touched by God
Mother Teresa was traveling by train to a holiday house and was watching whilst a beggar came to the train asking people for money, food, etc. She didn’t give anything to him, nor did many people, but after that trip she couldn’t get the picture of him out of her head. She took this as a sign that she need to leave Loreto and start to help the less fortunate, so she did.
After this experience, Mother Teresa helped many people and created a Missionary and a house for the ‘Dying and Destitute”. For most of Mother Teresa’s life, she devoted herself to helping others rather than herself which shows a lot of love and trust in what she does.
