Mother Teresa was born on the 26 August 1910 in Macedonia, although at that time she was known as Agnes Bojahiu. At the age of twelve, she felt the strong call of God and knew that her life would then be led by the love of Jesus and the love she has for the others around her. At the age of eighteen, she left her home in Macedonia to join the Sisters of Loreto in India. It wasn’t until then she received the name of Mother Teresa.
In May 1931, she took her vows as a nun and began teaching at St Mary’s High School, and became the principal in 1944. In 1946, Teresa received a ‘call within a call’ as she called it, when she was on a train trip from Calcutta to Darjeeling. The call was to give rise to the Missionaries of Charity and because of this, she left the school to help the sick and poor.
In 1950, Mother Teresa received permission to start her own order, “The Missionaries of Charity” whose main goal was to ‘love and care for those persons nobody was prepared to look after’. The society became an International Religious Family by decree of Pope Paul VI, 15 years later and is now active in 133 countries and consists of over 4500 religious sisters who have vowed to give ‘whole hearted and free service to the poorest of the poor’.
Mother Teresa’s work has been recognised by many people throughout the world and she has received a number of awards for what she has done. The highest of them all, being the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 and the Pope John XXIII Peace Prize in 1971. Teresa was beatified in 2003, giving her the title ‘Blessed Teresa of Calcutta’.
Mother Teresa was an extraordinary woman in history and has given so much for the world we live in today, which will never be forgotten.
